Alfred S. Cavaretta Jr. ’66 died unexpectedly on December 24, 2025, in his hometown of Kent, Ohio. Raised in Lexington, Massachusetts, he graduated from Lexington High School in 1962. After Dartmouth Alfred began working in various aspects of classical analysis and approximation theory at the Army Mathematics Research Center at Madison, Wisconsin, and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. He went on to teach at Middlebury College in Vermont and California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He settled at Kent State University in Ohio, where he taught for 39 years and was emeritus professor of mathematics. Alfred’s work was widely published in various math journals throughout his career. Mathematics and music were his life. He loved teaching and playing piano for others. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new cultures and people and had many stories of his experiences. He enjoyed swimming, golf, and tennis. Alfred loved and was loved by his family and friends, who sorely miss him. He was vivacious and outgoing with a natural ability to connect with people and lift their spirits with his humor, kindness, and wonderful smile.
