Irwin S. Barshack ’57

Irwin S. Barshack ’57 of North Oaks, Minnesota, passed away on November 18, 2017, after a 10-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Irv came to Dartmouth from Forest Park High School in Baltimore. He was at Dartmouth one year, then transferred to the University of Maryland Pharmacy School, where he graduated, returned to the Baltimore area, and ran the family pharmacy business for 20 years. He sold the business to a large corporation, and then answered an advertisement for a stockbroker. He went to work in financial services for Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. After a four-month training program in New York City, Irv was assigned to Legg’s Maryland office. Investment management was a perfect fit. He worked for Legg for many years, continuing on when it became Robert Baird & Co. Irv spent 30 productive years in wealth management. A high school classmate described Irv as “a charming guy, smart enough to marry his high school sweetheart.” He and Barbara were married for more than 60 years and had five children. Irv is survived by Barbara; children Leonard, Scott, Evan, and Randi ’88; and grandson Joseph. Daughter Pamela predeceased Irv.
