John Phillips Stearns ’49

John Phillips Stearns ’49 died on August 16, 2017, in New London (New Hampshire) Hospital. “Bull Moose” came to Dartmouth from Columbia High School in Wilton, Connecticut. He was the quintessential Dartmouth man as an undergraduate, an alumnus and a class leader. John was editor of The Dartmouth and belonged to Paleopitus, Casque & Gauntlet, Green Key, the Glee Club and Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Harvard Law School, spent time as a lawyer and investment banker and retired as a vice president of American Express in 1988, when he moved to Hanover. John was named Class President of the Year in 1999, was honored with the Dartmouth Alumni Award in 2004 and coordinated 1949’s class reunions for decades. He is survived by his wife, Winifred, daughter Winky ’82, son Tony ’86 and a class that honors him for all he did.
