Richard D. Mann ’57

Richard D. Mann ’57 passed away on August 12, 2016, in Hingham, Massachusetts, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dick grew up in Franklin, Massachusetts, and came to Dartmouth from Dean Academy in 1953. At Dartmouth he studied economics and belonged to Chi Phi. He also played lacrosse for four years. Following graduation he served a tour of duty as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He then attended the Amos Tuck School, earning an M.B.A. in 1960. After graduating from Tuck Dick joined his family’s textile firm. He eventually became president and co-owner of the company. In 1992 the firm was purchased by Draper Knitting. He worked there for the next 10 years. Dick was a deacon of the local United Church of Christ and served on the boards of Draper Knitting, the Rockland Trust and Clark, Cutter, McDermott. He was also a dedicated trustee of Dean College, where he served many years, including 10 as chairman of the board. Dick loved the outdoors, especially skiing, tennis and hiking. He played lacrosse and was an excellent swimmer. He was active in Dartmouth affairs, serving on class reunion committees and as an Alumni Fund and admissions volunteer. Dick is survived by his wife, Lois, a son, two daughters and two grandchildren. A daughter predeceased him.
