Preston Howard Saunders ’52

Preston Howard Saunders ’52 passed away at home on July 20, 2016. “Sandy” was born on April 22, 1930, in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Phillips Andover Academy in 1948 and from Dartmouth in 1952. At Dartmouth Sandy was an economics major, graduating with distinction. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi and very active as a member of the Glee Club, Dartmouth Outing Club (vice president), Undergraduate Council and director of competitions for the College ski team. He graduated from Harvard Law School, class of 1955, and joined Goodwin, Procter and Hoar in Boston, becoming partner in 1963. Sandy worked at Goodwin, Procter for more than 40 years, specializing in estate planning and trust and estate administration. After retiring in 1998 he joined Nichols and Pratt, a private trustee firm in Boston. His final retirement came in 2014. Sandy was a dedicated volunteer, serving the Appalachian Mountain Club as president twice and as a life trustee of the Museum of Science, chair of the Trustees of Reservations and board member of the Northern Forest Center. He was a member of the Lodge of St. Andrew since 1964. He is survived by Rebecca, his wife of 52 years; daughter Katharine ’89 and her husband, John; son Benjamin ’92 and his wife, Desiree; four grandchildren; brother Timothy; and nephew Norman Jr. ’76. He was predeceased by brother Norman’48.
