James H. Chubb ’60

James H. Chubb ’60 died on September 8, 2015. Jim was born in York, Pennsylvania, on March 23, 1938. At Dartmouth he joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon, rowed crew, participated with the Dartmouth Players and majored in philosophy. Immediately after Dartmouth he enlisted in officer candidate school and was commissioned as an officer in the Navy. He credited his service in the Navy with “turning me into a lifelong vagabond.” After receiving an M.B.A. from Columbia, Jim spent 40 years in international business, starting out in London by way of Edinburgh, then moved to Aachen, Germany, where he met his first wife, Inge. He moved through corporate paths in marketing and operations, finally landing on finance with companies in Switzerland, Holland, Denmark and Zaire. His longest tenure was spent as chief financial officer with an Italian joint venture, where he lived on Lake Como. Homesickness brought him back to the United States, where he was president of Sandretto Plastic Machinery Co. in Michigan. Inge died in 1995. Moving back to Germany to work for Continental Tire Co., he took the position of chief financial officer and chief operating officer for Eastern Europe and served on the board for Barum Continental in the Czech Republic. He married an old family friend, Susan, his wife of 16 years, who survives. He is remembered and loved by a long list of family members and a large community of friends.
