Frederick L. Merrill ’52

Frederick L. Merrill ’52 passed away on December 20, 2014, in Springfield, Illinois. He was born on April 7, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois, graduated from Evanston High School in 1948, Dartmouth in 1952 and the University of Chicago School of Business with an M.B.A. At Dartmouth he was a Tuck major and a member of Sigma Nu. He served in the U.S. Army as a special agent of the Counterintelligence Corps from 1952 to 1954. Fred was a lifelong commercial banker, starting at the Northern Trust Co. in Chicago in 1954 and later as the president and CEO of several commercial banks in Wisconsin, retiring as the president of a bank in Springfield. He served as a director on many boards and was very active in community and civic organizations and events. His first wife, Mary, and his second wife of 26 years, Judy, survive him. His identical twin brother, Henry, passed away eight days after Fred. He is survived by son Frederick Jr. and his wife, Wendy; son Stuart and his wife, Shelly; daughter Lynn; granddaughter Corey; stepson Michael and his wife, Becky; stepdaughter Melinda and her husband, Alex; stepson Brent; and 11 step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by stepson Brian. After his retirement in 1995 Fred and Judy traveled the world, including trips to Europe, South America and China.
