William Nichols Fisher ’52

William Nichols Fisher ’52, born on October 18, 1929, in New Canaan, Connecticut, died quietly on April 19, 2014, in San Francisco. He attended Deerfield Academy. At Dartmouth he graduated with a degree in sociology, was a member of Psi Upsilon and lettered in squash and lacrosse. He was a serious, strong competitor and excelled in athletics, including hockey, rugby and tennis, as well as squash and lacrosse. He was a member of the rugby team that reintroduced the sport at Dartmouth in 1951. Following college he entered the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as an officer during the Korean conflict. After the military, Bill was a sales executive in New York City for TIAA-CREF. He then accepted a job with the federal government in Washington, D.C., an assignment that required extensive travel. Bill moved to San Francisco in the 1970s and joined Wells Fargo Bank as a mortgage assessor and a home loan counselor until the savings-and-loan market came under fire. Concurrently he was a committed fan of classical music and an ardent listener of recordings as well as radio broadcasts, never missing a performance. He met his partner, Dennis Mullen, in 1983 at a Bizet opera. He ended his business career with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program for urban housing. After retirement he kept busy by starting a small real estate consulting practice. His partner, Dennis, survives him.
