John T. Walker ’60
John T. Walker ’60 passed away in Asheville, North Carolina, on February 27, 2014, a month after suffering a stroke. John came to Dartmouth from Whittier, California. A true scholar, he majored in German language and literature and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After obtaining his M.A. in German at the University of Southern California, he joined the faculty of Fullerton College, where he spent the next 48 years engaging students with his pedagogical antics and wonderful sense of humor. Along the way he obtained an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Irvine. During his undergraduate years John spent a semester abroad at the University of Freiburg, Germany, forming friendships there that he continued for the rest of his life. One of his major accomplishments was the establishment of a study abroad program for Fullerton and Cypress colleges, which has now endured for a quarter of a century. John loved Dartmouth and its students, but was able to restrain his enthusiasm for the cold weather. He had many friends, both classmates and underclassmen, and was always willing to listen and to help. In 2011 John retired to the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with his wife, Joy. His gentle smile and easy laughter will be sorely missed by those of us who knew and cared for him.
