Charles R. Mayorkas ’51
Charles R. Mayorkas ’51, who joined the class from his native Cuba, died on February 24 in Beverly Hills, California. He is survived by four children and three grandchildren. His wife, Anita, predeceased him. Carlos attended Ruston Academy, an English language school in Cuba, before coming to Dartmouth. He returned after graduation from the Tuck School to what he described as the idyllic life of that country. He and his family left Cuba for Miami in 1960 following the ascent to power of Fidel Castro. They never returned. His life in the United States epitomized the American dream. Through a combination of hard work, responsibility and his gregarious manner he rose to positions of leadership in the textile industry. At the same time he quietly found time to give back. He was especially active until shortly before his death as a volunteer at the not-for-profit Maple Counseling Center in Los Angeles, which provides mental health services. His family, in summing up Carlos’ life, emphasized especially that he was a wonderful father and, with Anita, built a truly loving home. Carlos spoke of his time at Dartmouth as some of the best years of his life, both academically and because of the warm friendships, especially through his membership in Phi Delta Theta.
