Lew Carey Sayers Jr. ’68

Lew Carey Sayers Jr. ’68 died on October 4, 2011, at Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas, where he spent the last 36 years teaching English, developmental writing and technical writing. He apparently died of a heart attack suffered during a run. Lew graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, and at Dartmouth was active with the Jack-O-Lantern for four years and served as athletic chairman at Bones Gate. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1972, and then earned a master of arts in teaching at Reed College. He was devoted to mentoring students, at Mountain View College and also the Trinity River Mission in West Dallas. Lew was passionate about his work, often staying up until 4 in the morning grading papers. He was an avid sportsman and loved fishing, basketball and tennis with colleagues, friends and family. He was named Most Valuable Player on the faculty softball team. Lew’s unbridled optimism, kind-hearted spirit, brilliant sense of humor, calm patience and enduring compassion made him a great teacher and treasured friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Janis, sister Joanne and brother Andy.
