John C. Baird ’60

John C. Baird ’60 died peacefully at his home in South Pomfret, Vermont, on June 8. While at Dartmouth, “Jack” played varsity football, and his teammates said that, pound for pound, no one hit harder. He also was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. After Dartmouth Jack attended Princeton University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1964. He returned to Dartmouth to join the faculty, serving a distinguished career as professor of psychology and brain sciences for 33 years. What a contribution he made to so many students at our alma mater. After retirement in 2000 Jack continued research and teaching as an adjunct professor of medicine at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. It can be said that Jack devoted his life to Dartmouth. From 2000 until his death he continued his passion for research and made it available for the public through the company he founded, Psychological Applications, LLC of North Pomfret, Vermont. Research kept him from regularly attending the monthly lunch meetings of his Upper Valley classmates. Jack is survived and will be missed by his wife, Clara, daughters Andrea and Audrey, four grandchildren and brother Paul. The gratitude of the College community for what he gave during his lifetime was expressed with a service of celebration June 24 in Rollins Chapel.
