John Widman Appleford ’60


John Widman Appleford ’60 died October 6, 2009, at his home in Waynesboro, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite. He is survived by brother Robert and children Patricia, Susan, Barbara, Laurie, John and Mark. At Dartmouth John was a widely known and respected member of his class, establishing himself early in his freshman year as a strong football prospect who went on to play varsity football on the 1958 squad that won the Ivy League Championship. In addition to football he competed in track. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. John, an economics major at Dartmouth, returned to Michigan following graduation to study law at the University of Michigan. After completing his degree he was admitted to the American Bar Association, the Michigan State Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar Association. While practicing law in Virginia John served as mayor of Monterey and was active in both the Lions Club and Kiwanis. John was always a deeply committed churchman, beginning in his youth in Michigan as an acolyte at Christ Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In his adult years he was actively involved at both St. John’s Church in Waynesboro and Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, Virginia.
