Joseph Samuel Leeper , Ph.D., died unexpectedly of acute respiratory pneumonia on July 9. He came to Dartmouth from the Hood River High School in Prineville, Oregon, where he was active in football, basketball, bowling, and student government. At Dartmouth he was a geography major, and played football, rugby, and intramurals. He was a member of Phi Delt, where he served as social and athletic chair. He also was a member of the Interdormitory Council and Dragon Society. After Dartmouth Joe earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in geography from the University of Oregon. He started teaching at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, in 1971 and moved from instructor to faculty to chairman of the geography department, retiring in 2009. Joe was the recipient of multiple educational awards, including being named “Outstanding Educator” by the California Geographical Society and National Council of Geographic Education. He was proud when former students help create a Joseph S. Leeper scholarship in his honor, which has supported at least 13 geography majors. Joe loved golf: playing often in California and proudly at St. Andrews in Scotland. Per the 1967 40th reunion book, he also loved golf club repair and golf club building. He spotted at Humboldt football games and kept score at basketball games. Joe was also active with the College as an alumni fund volunteer and an admissions ambassador. Joe is survived by his wife, Louise, and daughter Kirsten.
