Jan Robert Westervelt —a multifaceted community leader for more than 50 years in Cabot, Vermont—passed away at his home on April 16. Jan traveled the world as a child and studied at Le Rosey in Rolle, Switzerland, before attending Dartmouth. After graduation he earned his M.P.H. at the University of North Carolina. Moving in 1971 to Cabot, where he and wife Janet raised four children, Jan first worked in the state public health department. He became a certified public accountant in 1973 and opened an accounting firm; explored the possibilities of software in healthcare in the early 1980s, worked in the granite industry in the early 1990s, and served as acting executive director of the Vermont Historical Society. Jan then worked with the Caledonia County Central Supervisory Union before returning to work for the state, first for the governor’s office and then for the human services agency. A dedicated member of the Cabot community, Jan served two terms on the school board, coached elementary school soccer, was town meeting moderator, and helped restore the local church and clock tower. In retirement he embraced earlier passions such as sailing, repairing clocks, and spending time along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. He is survived by Janet; brother-in-law Tony; children Ted, Mary, David, and Anna; and eight grandchildren.
