John David Barbieri —a 6-foot-10 financial trader, lawyer, and rugby enthusiast described by wife Judy as a “gentle giant”—passed away on December 3, 2024, after a four-year battle with myeloma and Parkinson’s disease. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, John graduated with honors from Miami’s Hialeah High School. At Dartmouth he was a member of Bones Gate, played basketball and soccer, and discovered a lifelong passion for rugby. After college he earned an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia, met and married Judy, and started his career at Bankers Trust in New York City. In 1971 John and his family moved to England on a one-year posting that turned out to be permanent. He worked for several financial firms in London at the forefront of the emerging currency options and futures market. After 25 years John left the financial world, finished his law degree, and for the next decade worked at a law firm in Wimbledon. Other than his family, John had two great passions in his life: playing rugby with his beloved London Irish B’s and classic Lancias. He drove a restored Lancia Aurelia to work daily in Wimbledon. Upon retirement John and Judy split their time between England and Sanibel, Florida, where John was a volunteer docent at the Historical Outdoor Museum. John is survived by Judy; children Christian, Gillian, Lars, Oliver, and Sophie; and friends around the world. Donations in his memory may be made to cancerresearchuk.org or parkinsons.org.uk.
