Douglas C. Brew died on August 19 in Hospice of Mercy, Durango, Colorado. Doug graduated from Ithaca (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in geology and was in Kappa Sigma, Casque & Gauntlet and Green Key. He ran cross country and track. In 1956 he finished third in 800-meter NCAA championships, was an All-American in the 800-meter, and ran in the Olympic trials. A member of U.S. Marine Corps platoon leader class, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1957 (later promoted to first lieutenant). He was with the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea during the Lebanon crisis. Released from active duty in 1960, he served in the reserves until 1964, when he was honorably discharged. Doug began his doctorate in paleontology at Cornell University. He worked on the Colorado Plateau, falling in love with the open spaces and geology of the West. After completing his Ph.D. in 1965 he began teaching at New York University. He moved to Prescott College in Arizona, followed by short-term geology positions at the universities of Minnesota and Arizona. He accepted a position at Fort Lewis College in Durango, working in the classroom and leading field trips for the rest of his career. He was an alumni fund volunteer for 23 years. Doug built his innovative home on Wildcat Canyon Road in Durango. He built other homes in Durango and in Poland (Habitat for Humanity). He leaves behind son Greg, daughter Aileen, and partner Dottie.
