David Seebold Zimmerman passed away on June 1 after an extended illness in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where he had practiced medicine for more than 50 years. Born in nearby New Cumberland, he graduated from the local high school with significant honors. He received a full scholarship to Dartmouth, where he played football as a freshman, pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and majored in chemistry and zoology. After a year at Dartmouth Medical School, he went on to earn his M.D. in 1959 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. As a new doctor Dave joined the U.S. Air Force and qualified as a flight surgeon in Korea at the rank of captain. After discharge he returned to the Mechanicsburg area in 1961 and set up a partnership. A proud family physician, he made house calls and pitched in as emergency room doctor, Mechanicsburg School District physician, and president of the board of a local hospital. An accomplished woodworker all his life, David spent much time in retirement creating cabinets and other furnishings for family and friends. He described himself as a “better-than-average carpenter, cabinetmaker, gardener, wallpaper hanger, house painter, and bread baker.” He was an avid Penn State football fan, though his greatest joy was spending time with his wife, Karen, who survives. He also leaves children Craig, Todd, and Claudia; stepchildren John and Michael; 11 grand- and great-grandchildren; and niece Diane.
