John H. Levitas passed away peacefully on July 7 at the Mohawk Valley Health System Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Utica, New York, one week before his 91st birthday. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, John grew up in nearby Westwood, graduating from Westwood High School in 1951. He went on to earn his A.B. and a master’s in business and government from Tuck School in 1956. He later acquired an M.A. in higher education and finance from Columbia University Teachers College and then served as bursar at Mohawk Valley Community College. After Army service John and his first wife raised two children in Whitesboro, New York. After that marriage ended, he met and married June, who had two children. Ownership of a wine and spirits shop in Utica and other business ventures filled John’s working days and traveling with June, hiking in the Adirondacks, reading, and golfing (which he did into his 80s) occupied his leisure time. A member of the Utica Tramp & Trail Club, John climbed many of the 46 Adirondack “High Peaks.” Community service formed a large part of John’s volunteer portfolio, and his alma mater was perhaps the biggest recipient of time and energy. From 1970 onward he was an admissions interviewer, liaison officer, or president of his regional club. John is survived by June, two children, two stepchildren, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
