Evan Luther Nelson Jr. , M.D., passed away peacefully July 31 at the Charter House in Rochester, Minnesota. He was born on July 10, 1930, in Chicago. Evan married Shirley Campbell and they had children Jeff, Sally, Kim, Sue, and Stacey. Evan graduated from West High School in Minneapolis in 1948 and then from Dartmouth with a degree in philosophy. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He then served in the Army as a medical orderly stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Evan went on to attend medical school at the University of Minnesota and trained at the Mayo Clinic from 1962 to 1966. He became an otolaryngologist surgeon, founded three medical practices in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and made his home in Edina, Minnesota. Later, he returned to the Mayo Clinic where he practiced for another 25 years, retiring in 2007. He practiced medicine for more than 49 years. He loved traveling to many countries and continued to do so until a year before his death. He enjoyed serving abroad through Christian mission work, including with Doctors Without Borders. He played racquetball three to five times per week for more than 60 years and loved gardening with passion. He is survived by children Jeff and Sally, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife and children Kim, Sue, and Stacey.
