Frank Phillips Palmer Jr. ’63

Frank Phillips Palmer Jr. ’63 passed away on August 25, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born in Schenectady, New York; moved to Oak Park, Illinois; and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School, where he participated in basketball, football, and debate. At Dartmouth Frank majored in history, played football, and was a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, where he was house manager. He earned an M.S. in history at University of Wisconsin. He volunteered as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth. Frank became a social studies teacher at Scotia-Glenville Central School, near Schenectady, teaching there for 31 years, starting the boys volleyball program, and coaching football for many years. An avid sports fan, he announced at his children’s football games at nearby Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. During some summers Frank worked as a consultant for the New York State Bureau of Social Studies. He was a strong believer in public education and was apprehensive about budget cuts and attacks on public employees. As a longtime resident of the Scotia and Burnt Hills area, Frank enjoyed interacting locally with the many neighbors who had been his students. He was married for 53 years to Barbara, who passed away in 2017, and he is survived by three children and four grandchildren.
