Stuart L. Richards ’63

Stuart L. Richards ’63 passed away on December 27, 2023. He was from Kew Gardens, New York, and attended Stuyvesant High School, where he was a class vice president; worked for the newspaper, magazine, and yearbook; and participated in the glee club, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college and majored in government at Dartmouth. Stuart was a brother of Alpha Delt (athletic director), rowed crew, played rugby, and was a member of the Outing Club and the ski patrol. He was an alumni fund volunteer. After Dartmouth he worked at several jobs prior to enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his service Stuart moved to Vermont, where he joined the Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski patrols and was a rep for the Miller Soft Ski Co. He began a lengthy career in Vermont real estate, leading developments at Sugarbush and Killington. Upon retirement in the late 1980s, he was a founder of Ford Sayer Academy for aspiring high school alpine ski racers. In 2004 Stuart helped his son found Global Rescue Cos., one of the largest providers of travel risk management, evacuation, and security extraction. He was also a forceful advocate for responsible government; he resisted certain illiberal trends and was involved in several precedent-setting Vermont legal cases. He is survived by his wife, Miriam, two sons, and five grandchildren.
