Peggy Ruby Martineau ’82

Peggy Ruby Martineau ’82 of Grantham, New Hampshire, passed away on April 29. Peggy graduated from Fair Haven Union High School as valedictorian, where she was also an athlete, concert pianist, and singer. At Dartmouth Peggy did gymnastics and sang in the Glee Club and a production of HMS Pinafore. Peggy majored in economics and premed, marrying Bill Martineau ’82 in 1981 and thereafter living in married student housing. After graduation they built a business in Grantham. Peggy had a long career with Eastman Community Association, a sustainable planned community in the Dartmouth-Sunapee region that the College helped establish in 1971. Dormmate Becky Ambrose recalled a spring break trip to Florida with Jenny Jones and Zoe Hart. “Peggy was the quiet, calm, mature one who always helped us make wise decisions. She was beautiful inside and out, soft-spoken, kind, and unassuming.” They reconnected during covid on Zoom, along with Jenny and Kevin C. Jones. Peggy was battling throat cancer. “She was still her graceful, warm, sweet self and I am grateful to have reconnected, even if briefly.” Peggy is survived by daughters Paige and Chelsea and her longtime partner. Bill passed away in 1996 from cancer. Typical of Peggy, her essay in our 25th reunion book focused on Bill’s considerable life achievements and her two daughters. Not a word about herself.
