Hugh B. Lade ’65

Hugh B. Lade ’65 died on June 14 in Seattle from primary central nervous system lymphoma. He came to Dartmouth from Kirkland, Washington. A psychology major, he participated in crew all four years as stroke of the heavyweight boat. Following Dartmouth Hugh earned an M.B.A. from the University of Washington, then did a two-year stint in the Peace Corps in Tonga. He and Carol were married shortly after his return in 1970, followed in 1973 by a seven-month bicycle tour of Europe. Hugh managed the family business, Multiscore, manufacturing industrial woodworking machinery. Assuming the head role after his father’s passing, he treated employees like family, providing good pay and benefits and supporting them through personal struggles. Active and athletic, Hugh ran 10Ks, raced a Hobie Cat, and enjoyed cycling and skiing. He loved music and playing guitar. He built guitars with his father and in 1990 started a rock band, ‘The Usual Suspects,’ which booked gigs and weddings and regularly practiced for more than 30 years. Inspired to get back to rowing when son Brian was on the winning boat in the 1994 Nationals, Hugh joined Lake Washington Rowing Club, where he spent nearly three decades as a member, coach, regatta organizer, mentor, and trusted friend. He was recognized for his years of service with the 2022 Board of Directors Award. Hugh is survived by Carol; son Brian and wife Carolina; daughter Emily; grandchildren Desmond, Ciara, and Aidan; and step-grandchildren Edgar and Alina.
