Robert K. Sproull ’57

Robert K. Sproull ’57 passed away on January 18. Bob came to Dartmouth from Scarsdale (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in government and was an Army ROTC cadet and member of Sigma Chi and Dragon. Upon graduation Bob was commissioned as a U.S. Army second lieutenant in Signal Corps and spent 18 months in Okinawa, Japan. Following his military service, Bob became a stockbroker in New York City, where he also opened the Red Onion Saloon. The Red Onion became very successful and a hangout for many classmates, including Pete Carothers ’57. In N.Y.C. Bob also met the love of his life, Myrna, who became his wife for 60 years. He was an avid New York Giants fan and season ticketholder for more than 55 years. In the early 1970s Bob moved his young family to Aspen, Colorado, to pursue his interest in skiing and open Jake’s restaurant and bar, which became a favorite spot for musicians such as John Denver, Neil Young, and Jimmy Buffett to play unannounced for the locals. In the early 1980s Bob and his family trekked eastward to live in Hanover for several years. Bob and Myrna for the past 35 years lived in Florida, where they made many friends and happy memories. He is survived by Myrna and sons Robert Jr. ’88 and William ’91.
