Bruce C. Nisula ’66

Bruce C. Nisula ’66, M.D., passed away on August 30, 2022, in Boca Raton, Florida, after a multi-year battle with cancer, a disease he spent decades studying at the National Institute of Health (NIH). Bruce graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth and earned his M.D. Alpha Omega Alpha from Harvard. After an internship at Peter Brent Brigham Hospital and residency at Children’s Hospital Center, both in Boston, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service. Bruce spent most of his career at the NIH in the developmental endocrinology branch (DEB), where he conducted research and patient care until his appointment as chief of the DEB in 1988. During his tenure Bruce developed the process chemistry to identify the presence of reproductive cancer in women that was ultimately patented in 1995. Throughout his career at the NIH, Bruce authored or coauthored more than 137 publications for the medical community. Bruce retired from NIH in 1995 and spent the next 12 years working with his son, Brian, in the field of asset, estate, and real estate management. Bruce was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Susan. Bruce found the second love of his life in Nancy, with whom he shared 14 years of family, friends, bridge, books, sports, and travel. There was nothing more important to Bruce than the well-being and success of his family. He is survived by many children, grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
