Lyman Bruce Coffey ’63

Lyman Bruce Coffey ’63 died from complications of an infection on October 11, 2022, while visiting friends in Connecticut shortly after a sailing trip in the British Columbia islands just days before. Bruce was born in Los Angeles and attended Phillips Andover Academy. At Dartmouth Bruce majored in engineering sciences and was a brother of Bones Gate. He married Marty shortly after graduation and joined the Navy, where he served on destroyers for three and a half years before earning his M.B.A. from UCLA in 1968. He joined Cresap McCormick, followed by Citibank, before joining his father in law’s company, Presto Food Products, later becoming president and CEO. He was instrumental in the growth of the company and supervised the building of a new plant in City of Industry, California and was active in the Young Presidents Association. Bruce came from a sailing family and used much of his time at the family house on Orcas Island, Washington, with his boat, Dulce Domum. He was a founder of the Orcas Island Foundation, a long-time board member of Four Winds Camp on Orcas and his interest in dramatics resulted in acting roles in the local Orcas Center. He also served as board chair of Chandler School and on the board of the Huntington Library. Bruce’s father attended Dartmouth, as did his sons, a daughter-in-law, and two grandsons. Bruce is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marty, two sons, two daughters, and 10 grandchildren.
