Michael A. Tompkins ’57

Michael A. Tompkins ’57, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Manor in Portland, Maine. Mike graduated from Worcester (Massachusetts) Academy. An English major, he was in Zeta Psi (rushing chairman) and Dragon and was a member of the Marine platoon leaders program. He attended Marine Corps officer candidate school in Quantico, Virginia, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He taught aerial intelligence at the Marine Corps air station in Kanehowe, Hawaii. Upon discharge, Mike joined the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. He worked in various sales and sales management positions in the home office (Worcester) and offices in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Boston. In mid-career he returned to the home office as operating head of one of three major divisions. He remained a key officer, retiring after 38 years. He remembers Dartmouth for the professors he had and the friends he made. He and his wife were regulars at Homecoming and reunions. Mike was one of a group of eight ’57s that traveled to Ireland each fall to enjoy the comradeship and play golf at the world-famous Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland, considered the oldest golf courses. He supported Dartmouth as an alumni councilor, class officer (treasurer, necrologist, vice president), admissions interviewer, club officer, and alumni fund volunteer. Mike was predeceased by Marianne, his wife of 60 years; he leaves sons Brian ’82 and Keith and three grandchildren.
