Madeleine Mae Billings ’20

Madeleine Mae Billings ’20 passed on December 30, 2021, after a long struggle with a treatment-resistant eating disorder. In middle and high school social circles, Maddie was the perennial Swiss, a member of all groups though exclusive to none. Her brain engaged early. At age 9, upon learning that Eminem sang “explicit” songs, Maddie earnestly confided, “My mom is an explicit driver.” Parents Lisa (Laumann) ’90 and Nick ’91 met in Hanover and introduced Maddie to Dartmouth. In her numerous attempts to navigate campus, Maddie was surrounded and supported by a group of loving and strong young women as well a compassionate administration. She was a Dartmouth Cancer Scholar, a sister at Kappa Kappa Gamma, and worked in professor Caroline Robertson’s neuroscience laboratory. In addition to her parents, Maddie is survived by siblings Emma, Pace, and Cooper. One of Maddie’s last acts was to enroll in a clinical trial at Johns Hopkins for treatment-resistant eating disorders. Maddie exhausted all conventional treatment, so her family has created the Maddie Mae Fund to support research into new treatments. Contact Nick Billings at nmbill87@gmail.com for details.
