Anchie Yi Kuo ’82, DMS’86

Anchie Yi Kuo ’82, DMS’86, M.D., of Oakland, California, and Manila, Philippines, died on May 23. He is remembered for his giant and loving heart, brilliant mind, spirit, passion for fitness, and deep love for family and friends. Anchie grew up in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, with younger sisters Anda ’91, M.D., and Anlee ’88, M.D., J.D. Anchie majored in economics, played lacrosse, and was a beloved member of Theta Delta Chi as well as an honorary brother of Phi Delta Alpha, an unusual honor. After Dartmouth Medical School he trained as a general surgeon at Yale but soon pivoted to venture funds focused on healthcare, becoming the lead healthcare partner for Bank of America Ventures and others. Anchie was owner and CEO of the first FDA-approved suture supply company in China and served on the boards of 15 healthcare companies. Prior to his death he was developing a consumer health company to supply clean water to disadvantaged neighborhoods across Asia. Anchie went to great effort to stay connected with his Dartmouth family. He attended every ’82 reunion (where he was the best dancer on the dance floor). Anchie was most proud of being a compassionate son, brother, and father to four wonderful children, two of whom graduated from medical school in 2020. His family shared this Chinese proverb: “All of life is a dream walking, all of death is a going home.”
