Timothy Perry Cole ’73

Timothy Perry Cole ’73 died on February 13 of an apparent heart attack at home in Washington, Connecticut. Tim came to the College from Lenox (Massachusetts) School after a year as an exchange student at Rugby School in England. At Dartmouth Tim studied abroad at Krogerup Folk High School near Copenhagen, Denmark, during his junior year and in West Berlin for one semester of his senior year. He majored in comparative literature and was a staff member of The Dartmouth. Tim earned a doctorate in comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, writing his dissertation on the poetry of Friedrich Holderlin. In the late 1980s Tim’s eight-year marriage to Doris Kammradt ended in divorce. He left the academic world; returned to Hartford, Connecticut, his birthplace; and became a picture framer, a community activist, and a volunteer at nonprofits. Rejoining the Episcopal Church, Tim thereafter maintained his sobriety and emotional well-being through meditation, yoga, and membership in a 12-step program. After surviving a near-fatal heart attack in 2012, he met Marion Stevens and moved to Litchfield Hills, Connecticut, to live with her. Tim spent the last eight years of his life writing, photographing, volunteering, and expressing his opinions. He is survived by Marion, sister Carol, and brothers Jeffrey and Tom. Memorial contributions may be made to Open House in Ramle, Israel, or to Church Street Eats at Christ Church Cathedral, 45 Church St., Hartford, CT 06103.
