Guy Hiwa Piltz ’60

Guy Hiwa Piltz ’60 died January 20 at his home in Waimea, Hawaii. Guy was born on September 9, 1938, in Honolulu. He often recalled the Japanese planes that flew over his home to bomb Pearl Harbor in 1941. At Dartmouth he played football and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi and the German Club. While there he met his future wife, Josephine, a student at Mount Holyoke. After graduation he attended the Episcopal Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California, where he earned a master’s in divinity in 1963. He was ordained to the deaconate in May and the priesthood in December. He served various congregations in the diocese of Hawaii until 1972, when he was appointed priest in charge of the mission of St. James Church in Waimea. The congregation grew under his leadership to a self-supported parish in seven years. In 1979 he accepted the call to permanent chaplain of the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, where he remained until his retirement. He taught history and served a term as chair of the history department. He provided pastoral assistance for the rector of St. James Church as a preacher and teacher of a weekly Bible study. He was fluent in German, Greek, and Latin and had a phenomenal memory that could recall biblical passages readily. Music was a major part of his life and he sang in church choirs. He is survived by his wife, three children, and grandchildren.
