Michael Roy Marantz ’63

Michael Roy Marantz ’63 of Jamaica, Vermont, died January 25 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Michael was experiencing stomach pain and was airlifted from the emergency center at Valley Regional Hospital on January 3, after aspirating contrast dye, according to the Brattleboro Reformer. Michael held on to life for three weeks but the damage to his lungs was too much, the newspaper reported. Michael grew up in New York City and summered in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and southern Vermont. At Dartmouth he was editor-in-chief of Greensleeves, the literary magazine, and earned a B.A. in English. He went on to receive an M.A. in cinema studies at New York University and became a documentarian, working as a director, editor and cinematographer in film and television. From 1982 through his retirement in 2000, Michael taught English in high school in New York City. After retirement he moved to Jamaica, Vermont, where he was an active member and known voice of Radio Free Brattleboro, the Common Ground, the Manitou Project, the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community and the Brattleboro Socialist Party. He built the Palden Sakya Center for Meditation and the Buddhist Study in Jamaica, which also serves as a venue for yoga and tai chi classes. He wrote poetry and editorials and disseminated Buddhist thoughts and Yiddish jokes. Michael is survived by daughters Julie and Ruth and sister Mady. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vikramasila Foundation, 289 Brookside Avenue, Cresskill, NJ 07626 (memo: Palden Sakya Center, VT).
