Maynard Hugh Riley ’41 died at home in Wilmette, Illinois, on September 24, 2011. “Bud” was born in Chicago and raised in Winnetka. At Dartmouth Bud was interested in the Mountaineering Club and Cabin & Trail and was a member of Phi Delta Alpha/Phi Delta Theta. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to the University of Chicago to study meteorology. He then was sent to the VII Air Force Fighter Command with the Army Air Corps to provide weather information for bomber and fighter missions. He was stationed in both England and Norway. Following the war Bud worked for Overseas Airlines in Oslo, Norway, forecasting weather over the Atlantic Ocean for the first transatlantic airline flights. He went on to become a telephone engineer with Illinois Bell Telephone Co., serving primarily in the Chicago area until he retired. Bud was a consummate sailor and an avid outdoorsman. After retirement Bud taught sailing for the Chicago Park District’s handicapped sailing program and served on the Wilmette Park District’s bicycle trails program. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ellen Clark Riley. Bud is survived by children Maynard, Jim and Sarah Riley and four grandchildren.
