Matthew S. Publicover ’79

Matthew S. Publicover ’79 died on April 5 while awaiting a heart transplant. He was born on February 9, 1957, in Newton, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Framingham. Matt and family lived in Merrimack, New Hampshire, until 2019, when he retired to Port Charlotte, Florida. At Dartmouth Matt majored in English, participating with the Aegis, the Dartmouth Film Society, and French foreign study program. After college he worked as a freelance reporter then pursued a career in retail for several sports companies then Yankee Candle. Matt served on the Merrimack school board budget committee, as a library trustee, and as a director for Port Charlotte Village. He also led a Boy Scout troop and coached soccer. Matt was creative, generous, and loving and passionate about music, cooking, photography, painting, writing, fishing, and backpacking with his family. Matt’s classmates relate that because of longstanding heart issues, “Matt saw each day as a gift and treated his personal relationships with reverence. He was an engaging friend, equally willing to laugh at some turn of events or to plunge into a deep philosophical discussion. Matt was gentle, thoughtful, curious, and appreciative of life’s simple pleasures. Family, friends, and community were his priorities.” Matt is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara, and sons Andrew and Ian and their families.
