Leon I. Mann ’57
Leon I. Mann ’57 of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away quietly on December 28, 2018, surrounded by his family. Leon grew up in Albany, New York, and graduated from the Albany Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in zoology, belonged to Sigma Chi, and was a member of the DOC all four years. He attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, graduating in 1961. Leon loved the practice of medicine. He dedicated his medical career to the care of women, becoming a renowned practitioner, educator, and researcher on obstetrics and gynecology with a specialty in maternal fetal medicine. Throughout his career he brought more than 5,000 babies into the world. His passion for teaching shaped the professional lives of hundreds of residents and fellows. In midcareer he was professor and chair of the department of obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Vermont Medical School. He was professor emeritus of reproductive biology in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Leon rediscovered Dartmouth when his daughters matriculated in the 1990s. He decided to summer in Hanover and winter in Florida. He and his wife of 47 years, Katherine, built a home in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. He served Dartmouth as an Alumni Fund and career network volunteer and club officer. Leon is survived by Katherine, daughters Stephanie ’94 and Alison ’95, sons Eric and Douglas, and 13 grandchildren. He leaves them a legacy of humor, kindness, generosity, and endless love.
