Joseph D. Kyle ’57

Joseph D. Kyle ’57 died February 25 in hospice care. Joe graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. At Dartmouth he majored in English and was a member of Sigma Nu. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, attended the military intelligence school at Fort Holabird, Maryland; the Army language schools in Monterey, California, and Oberammergua, Germany, studying German and Russian. He was honorably discharged in 1961, was recalled as a result of the Berlin Wall crisis, and served a year at Fort Washington (Maryland) during 1961-62. Soon after he was accepted in the Army Military Intelligence Service stationed at Kaiserslautern, Germany, from 1963 to 1965. Joe decided that military intelligence was not a career for him, resolved to be a college teacher of European history, and enrolled in the University of Erlangen, Germany. He then moved to Pittsburgh, where he completed his M.A. in history (1966) and then taught at Hastings (Nebraska) College while earning his Ph.D. in history from University of Pittsburgh (1976). He led trips to Europe and North Africa for students and community members. Joe also was president of the Adams County (Nebraska) Historical Society. In 1991 he accepted a National Park Service post with the Richmond National Battlefield Park in Virginia. Four years later he joined the staff of Historic Hanover (Virginia) Tavern as fundraiser and historian. Concurrently he taught at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. He later moved to Springfield, Virginia. Joe is survived by son Alexander and granddaughters.
