John William Loud White ’45

John William Loud White ’45 of Freeport, Maine, died at Maine Medical Center on April 16, of cancer. John grew up in Portland and Falmouth Foreside, Maine. He came to Dartmouth from Deering High School in Portland. At Dartmouth he was in the Navy V-12, which led to MIT and his commissioning at Columbia and then supply school at Harvard. He then served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific. While at Cambridge he met and courted Marian “Molly” Morton; they married in July 1947. John grew up on the Falmouth waterfront, fishing, boating and running a taxi service, which also included moving freight. His business career was dedicated to Consumers Water Co., where he began work in 1946 and served as president from 1966 to1984 and then as chairman and CEO. He also served as a director of the Key Bank of Southern Maine and subsequently the Key Trust Co. At Dartmouth he served the College as captain of Cabin & Trail and the class of 1945 by creating the Punta Gorda, Florida, annual mini-reunion. He was also a class agent and gift planning chair. John gave much of his later life to the South Freeport Church, Maine Historical Society, Maine Medical Center, Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Maine Seacoast Mission and United Way. He also enjoyed being with his extended family, taking them on the water frequently. Molly predeceased John; he is survived by children Benjamin ’79, Nathaniel, Martha and Marian, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
