John Wesley Tope Jr. ’44

John Wesley Tope Jr. ’44, M.D., died at the Cedar Hill Nursing Home in Windsor, Vermont, on August 14, 2009. He attended Dartmouth and Dartmouth Medical School, graduating in 1944. He completed his medical training at Northwestern Medical School, receiving his M.D. in 1946. While he was at Dartmouth he belonged to Navy V-12, Alpha Delta/Alpha Delta Phi and served as enrollment chairman wherever he lived at the time. John joined the Navy in 1947 and attended the School of Aviation Medicine. Jack was a general surgeon for 39 years at an Oak Park, Illinois, hospital founded by his grandfather. He was an associate and attending surgeon at Cook County Hospital, Illinois, where he did his residency in the breast tumor clinic for 15 years. He was predeceased by wives Kathryn and Mary. He is survived by daughters Mary, Kathleen, Linda and Elizabeth, two grandchildren, sister Shirley and several nieces and nephews.
