John W. Stouffer II ’57
John W. Stouffer II ’57 died on October 20, 2022. John graduated from Woodbury (New Jersey) High School. At Dartmouth his major was geology. He was a member of Sigma Chi, the Geological Society, and the Dartmouth Outing Club and participated in Navy ROTC. John was commissioned as ensign serving on a radar picket ship in the North Atlantic, as operations officer in the Caribbean, and antisubmarine warfare in the North Atlantic. In 1961 he was promoted to lieutenant, joining Destroyer Flotilla Four Group in Norfolk, Virginia. John attended defense intelligence school in Washington, D.C., and in 1964 was assigned to the military assistance command in Vietnam and promoted to lieutenant commander in 1966. In 1968 he took command of his first ship, operating throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans. In 1969 John reported to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, graduating with honors. He earned his master’s in foreign affairs from George Washington University, was assigned to the Pentagon, and promoted to captain. After service with the U.S. 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, he was transferred to naval operations in Washington, D.C. In 1976 he was promoted to commander of a guided missile carrier, and three years later joined the Commander Carrier Group Six in Florida. Retiring to a second career he joined Ameriprise Financial Inc., providing financial planning in Virginia Beach. John enjoyed raising and training Labrador retrievers. He is survived by Margie, his wife of 59 years, and family.
