John G. Skewes ’51

John G. Skewes ’51, director of business affairs emeritus at Dartmouth and a leader in civic and community affairs in Hanover for many years, died on March 27. Jack was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Sphinx senior society during his undergraduate years at Dartmouth and was active in baseball, football, and rugby. Following two years as an officer in the U.S. Army, including service in Korea, he returned to Hanover to earn his M.B.A. at the Tuck School. He returned in 1960 to join the expanding staff of Dartmouth’s business office, serving for more than three decades under four presidents of the College. He ran a department that had oversight for buildings and grounds, dining services, student housing, purchasing, human resources, risk management, and the Hanover Inn. Jack was named the 1993 Hanover Citizen of the Year in recognition of his many contributions to the community. Though the years he was president of the Hanover Improvement Society and was elected to the Hanover and Dresden school boards and the Hanover board of selectmen. For many years he chaired the Hanover Inn board of overseers. He was a founder of the Hanover Youth Hockey Association and served as a director of the Hanover Water Works Co. Jack’s wife, Connie, predeceased him in 2020. He is survived by four children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
