Jane Barry Hartwell ’78

Jane Barry Hartwell ’78 died on December 7, 2023, in Portland, Maine, after a protracted struggle with pancreatic cancer. Jane came to Dartmouth from Hingham, Massachusetts, and lived in French Hall her first year. Todd Baker ’78 recalls: “She had a strong south of Boston accent and a no-nonsense personality. French Hall was a truly bizarre mixture of hopeful freshmen and women, the fun and alternative ‘Fourth Floor Crazies,’ a few interesting upperclassmen, and an awful group of drunken seniors. Our Dartmouth experience was very different from the kids in central places such as Butterfield and Wheeler. Jane and the rest of us newbies bonded on those long winter walks up and down Tuck Drive in the wind and snow and stayed close until we graduated.” She majored in psychology and was a Big Sister all four years at Dartmouth. Jane graduated from Yale Law School in 1981 and went into practice. After 20 years she left her successful law practice to become youth missioner of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. She mentored thousands of children in this role. In retirement she served as the lay leader of Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland. Jane is survived by her husband of 40 years, Davis; son Benjamin; and grandchildren Hugo and Alice.
