James Loftus Fowler ’52

James Loftus Fowler ’52 passed away from congestive heart failure on January 20, 2015, in Alexandria, Virginia. Jim was born in Mineola, New York, prepared for college at Mamaroneck (New York) High School and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in history. He was a member of Zeta Psi, lettered in lacrosse and received the Class of 1866 Oratory Medal. He then received a commission in the Marine Corps, serving as an infantry line officer in both the Korean and Vietnam campaigns. His decorations include two awards of the Bronze Star and two awards of the Purple Heart. Jim remained in the reserves, with periods of active duty, until his retirement as a colonel in 1982. Between 1958 and 1979 Jim earned a J.D. from Georgetown University, an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia, an LL.M. from Georgetown, an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a master’s in history from Georgetown. He spent the last decades of his career with the Central Intelligence Agency, and retired in 2005 from Unilever, where he was a chief of corporate security. Jim may be best known as the founder of the Marine Corps Marathon, the annual race that has drawn tens of thousands of athletes to Washington, D.C., during nearly four decades. It began in 1976 and is one of the largest races of its kind. His wife of 54 years, Betsy, survives him. Semper fi, Mac!
