James Leon Fraser ’52

James Leon Fraser ’52 died at home in Williston, Vermont, on February 4. Jim was born in Paris, France, attended the Buckley School in New York City, Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, and Dartmouth, graduating in 1952. While at Dartmouth he majored in economic geography and was a Rufus Choate Scholar as well as a senior fellow. He was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Following college Jim married Mary Ann Gunther and served in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps. After military service he moved to New York City and worked first for First National City Bank, then for the brokerage firm of Hayden, Stone & Co. In 1961 Jim founded the Fraser Publishing Co. in Wells, Vermont, which published books focusing on creativity and independent thinking as it relates to investments, speculation, socio-economics and the history of Wall Street. Jim also collected and sold out-of-print books on these topics. In 1969 Jim moved Fraser Publishing to Burlington, Vermont, where in 1971 he also founded Fraser Management Associates Inc., a financial and investment counsel firm. In the late 1970s he was a columnist for U.S. News & World Report as well as a columnist in Better Investing. In 1970 he divorced, and in 1973 married Victoria Keller Becker, an artist and administrator. Jim is survived by Victoria, son Mark, daughter Maury, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His son Kevin predeceased him in 2000.
