James I. Scott Jr. ’57

James I. Scott Jr. ’57 passed peacefully on January 4 in his Hamilton, Ohio, home surrounded by his wife and four sons. Jim graduated from Hamilton High School. He began at Dartmouth as an English major, was in Gamma Delta Chi and played alto sax in the Barbary Coast. Sometime in his college career he pivoted to premed. After graduation Jim attended University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, then completed an internship at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. From 1962 to 1964 he served as captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He completed a residency at the Cincinnati General Hospital. Returning to his hometown of Hamilton, he and his partners built a respected internal medicine practice. By 1980 he had moved his family onto a farm in Hanover Township, where they lived for 29 years. He owned and managed a dairy farm in neighboring Preble County. Retiring in 2000, Jim became a member of the After Hours Big Band as lead alto sax and clarinet. He devoted part of each day to his music. He learned about antiques and restored furniture. Jim would do daily calisthenics at the local YMCA. He was an avid tennis player, then took up golf in his later years, relishing the companionship rather than the score. He was a very supportive father who found special fulfillment on fishing trips with his boys. Jim is survived by Emily, his wife of 64 years; four sons; and many grandchildren.
