James Henry Cooke ’52
James Henry Cooke ’52 of Marblehead, Massachusetts, died on September 12, 2014. Jim was born on July 5, 1930, in Lynn, Massachusetts; grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts; attended Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire; and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in architecture. He then received a master’s in civil engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Jim served as president and treasurer of Lynn Sand and Stone Co. in Swampscott until the company was sold in 1983. Jim was a member of a pioneer skiing family, instrumental in building the Mount Gunstock Ski Hoist and the first ski tow (1935-40) built in New Hampshire. He competed in cross-country ski and ski-jump events in prep school and college (varsity letter in skiing) and participated in the Dartmouth Outing Club, where he did much mountain hiking and rock climbing. All through his adult life Jim was an active skier and sailor, a member of the Mount Sunapee (New Hampshire) Ski Club, the Marblehead (Massachusetts) Sail and Power Squadron and the Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, Massachusetts). He was a teacher and innovator in skiing and sailing. His wife of 62 years, Jane, was also active with Jim in these endeavors, including skiing in the Masters races. She survives him, as do children Theodore II, David, Martha and Russell, their spouses, seven grandchildren and brother Phillips ’54. Jim’s brother, David ’57, predeceased him.
