J. Spencer Morgan ’60

J. Spencer Morgan ’60 died from a stroke on September 9, 2020. He is survived by two former wives Diane and Helene; daughter Jill ’85; son Jay; and grandchildren Lindsay ’16 and Brian ’18. He graduated from Rumson (New Jersey) High School and at Dartmouth was president of Sigma Chi, Dragon, and the Undergraduate Council; played basketball and baseball; was a member of the Outing Club and Air Force ROTC; and graduated with a major in history. Spencer’s career was in the forest products industry, where he is remembered as an expert in non-wood cellulose. He said his life highlights included owning his own company; skiing with Robert Redford; taking many trips to Tunisia and the Sahara; pushing a Mercedes down a sand dune with a Libyan army patrol; spending two weeks in French Polynesia; painting military miniatures; exploring countries lapped by the Mediterranean, Baltic, and Bering seas; and serving as a substitute high school teacher known as “Mr. Yankee.” Spencer loved Dartmouth and was named Class President of the Year in 1972.
