Irving F. Sherwood Jr. ’54

Irving F. Sherwood Jr. ’54 passed away August 14. He came to Dartmouth from Kimble Union Academy and in Hanover was active in Alpha Delta/Alpha Delta Phi and ROTC and was a standout hockey player who received league and national All-Star recognition in 1953 and 1954. After graduation he was commissioned to the U.S. Marine Corp and earned his wings in Pensacola, Florida. After leaving the service Irv got his master’s at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. During his working years, and influenced by his military experience, Irv focused on the aviation field. After a few years at General Electric, Cessna, Collins Radio, and Flight Safety International, he started his own company in 1978. Air-Mart International was a thriving business that provided an outlet for Irv to use his education, training, and people skills to make friends worldwide. Upon his retirement, Irv and wife Lee spent their leisure time traveling the world and maintaining friendships. Golfing with family and friends was his favorite social activity. In Florida he established Southwest Florida Golf Charities, which he served as president for 15 years. Irv’s most enjoyable retirement activity was being an off-ice official for the Florida Everblades hockey team along with Lee. Predeceased by his sister, Joan, Irv leaves Lee; children Sharon, Steven, Douglas, Barbara and their spouses; and nine grandchildren.
