Howard W. Phillips ’51, Tu'52
Howard W. Phillips ’51, Tu’52, a former class president and head agent with a varied career in the law, business and corporate finance, died on January 25. He is survived by his wife, Carol, two children, a stepson, four grandchildren and brother Gerald ’47. Howard graduated from Dartmouth magna cum laude in economics and English and from the Tuck School. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and on the staff of Jack-O-Lantern. Following service as a U.S. naval officer he attended Harvard Law School, again graduating with honors. He was active as an alumnus of both schools, heading the class of 1951 Alumni Fund campaign from 1965-1972 and serving as class president between the 20th and 25th reunions. Howard spent five years as a Wall Street lawyer, five years as senior vice president and chief operating officer of McCall Corp. (publishing) and 25 years as an investment banker with Oppenheimer & Co. and D.H. Blair & Co. His diverse experience made him especially effective in assisting small- and medium-sized clients with financial and operating concerns. His friends, colleagues and clients describe him as first and foremost a practical businessman and business problem-solver. Howard and Carol maintained homes in East Hampton, New York, and Sarasota, Florida, where he was an active golfer, tennis player and skier. His great love was the theater, especially the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, where he served as president and long-time board member.
