Henry McKinley Barker ’45

Henry McKinley Barker ’45, a longtime Knoxville, Tennessee, resident, died September 16, 2011, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He was born January 7, 1925, in Johnson City, Tennessee, and came to Dartmouth from Bristol. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, receiving his silver wings September 8, 1944. He was a member of the 8th Air Force, flying missions out of Old Buckingham, England. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1949 and General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, in 1951. After working in the insurance industry he joined the Tennessee Air National Guard full time and served in Rhein-Main, Germany, as detachment commander from 1967 to 1973. He was presented the Meritorious Service Award and retired as a lieutenant colonel and command pilot in 1973. He then worked as personnel director for Knox County. He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, in 1986 and is survived by children Margaret, Mary and Henry, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
